The Water Fountain

There are all kinds of ‘jokes’ and such about how finicky cats are. Vegas will eat just about anything put in front of her (and behind our backs, anything she can find on her own). She is not what I would call a finicky cat. Forget the fact that she eats out of a human food bowl which rests on the kitchen counter. No, she’s not finicky, just spoiled. :-)

When it comes to Vegas and water, however, it is a different story. She started out with a water bowl, but seemed to prefer drinking from my glass of water instead. So, I gave her a short, stout drinking glass. She liked that. Then I moved her up to a huge, blue-glass tea cup which she used happily for a long time.

Not to be outdone by fads, I made our my free standing, in-home fountain about six months ago. You know the ones, they sell for mega bucks in nature and nursery stores (and lots of other places now) and are quite pleasant to look at and listen to. I was very happy with the fountain but Vegas would go nowhere near it. I think it might have had something to do with running water; cats seem to have an aversion to running water.

Well, one day I came from from work to find her on the table top, near the fountain. I had to look twice before I realized that she was drinking from the fountain. Drinking from the fountain!

I thought it was so cute I went to her, picked her up and gave her a hug. I now refill the fountain every day and she hardly touches her fancy tea cup for water anymore. Just goes to show you, cats will pretty much do their own thing, no matter what we set out for them. In this case, she couldn’t have made a cuter decision!
